Super Falcons Eye Strong Start to WAFCON Title Defence Against Malawi

Defending champions Nigeria will begin their quest for a record-extending Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title when they take on tournament debutants Malawi at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday, with the Super Falcons determined to make a commanding start to their title defence.

The Falcons reclaimed the continental crown last year with a dramatic 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco in the final and will be aiming to lay down an early marker against the Scorchers.

However, head coach Justine Madugu has warned his players against underestimating the newcomers, insisting every team at the tournament deserves respect.

While Malawi are making their first appearance at the WAFCON finals, they boast dangerous attacking threats in sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga, who are capable of troubling any defence.

Madugu said his squad is fully focused on defending the title and will remain committed to its game plan.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade is expected to lead a star-studded lineup that could include Chiamaka Nnadozie, Osinachi Ohale, Michelle Alozie, Rofiat Imuran, Tosin Demehin, Deborah Abiodun, Halimatu Ayinde, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Asisat Oshoala.

Nigeria also have impressive depth on the bench, with the likes of Toni Payne, Jennifer Echegini, Gift Monday, Omorinsola Babajide and Folashade Ijamilusi ready to make an impact as the nine-time African champions begin another bid for continental glory.
