Amusan set to emulate UTEP Miners Adeniken, Okagbare, Osayomi, Ismaila who won Olympic medals for Nigeria
Former world 100m hurdles champion, Tobi Amusan is set to become the latest Nigerian who attended the University of Texas in El Paso, UTEP, to make it to the podium at the Olympics.
The 27 year old is making her third successive trip to the Olympics after running the 100m hurdles at Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021.
Amusan ran for UTEP track during the 2016 and 2017 seasons before turning pro. She was a 2017 NCAA champion in the event while placing second overall the season prior behind reigning Olympic champion in the 100m hurdles, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn.
The Nigerian was a Conference USA champion in the high hurdles and 200m in 2016 while also taking gold in the 100m hurdles and 4×100 relay in 2017.
She ranks first in school history in the 100m hurdles with a 12.57. The women’s 100 hurdles round one is Wednesday, Aug. 7.
She was fourth in her second trip to the Games three years ago and if she makes it to the podium this time around, she will become the fifth Nigerian linked to UTEP to win a medal.
Olapade Adeniken (4x100m, 1992 Barcelona), Blessing Okagbare (Long Jump, 2008 Beijing) and the duo of Osayomi Oludamola and Halimat Ismaila who won silver in the women’s 4x100m also in Beijing.
