Rohr promises Super Eagles war in Uyo as Benin eyes historic World Cup qualification

Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has declared that his team is ready for a fierce battle in Uyo against Nigeria, as the race for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches its dramatic conclusion.

Speaking to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana via WhatsApp voice note from Kigali, Rohr reflected on Benin’s hard-earned 1–0 victory over Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium on Friday, a result that keeps the Cheetahs top of Group C and just 90 minutes away from history.

‘It was a difficult game, of course. Rwanda wanted absolutely to win and we wanted to enjoy, in the end, the victory,’ Rohr said. ‘But we still have to do something great in Uyo. We have lost two players (for the match against Nigeria) as a result of a second yellow card.’

Despite the setback, Rohr remains confident that Benin’s fate is now in their own hands.

‘But all is possible for the three teams (#SouthAfrica, Benin and #Nigeria). We now have the decision (to win in Uyo) in our hands. This can be a little advantage. But we will see, Osasu, we will see. Big suspense, until the end [of the qualifying series].’

Rohr also revealed the emotional spark that fired up his players ahead of the Rwanda clash.

According to the former Super Eagles coach, comments made by South Africa’s Hugo Broos, suggesting Benin could not beat Rwanda or Nigeria, served as unexpected motivation.

‘When they heard Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos say that Benin cannot win against Rwanda and Nigeria, my players were very upset,’ Rohr said.

Now, with the final matchday looming, Rohr is bracing for a showdown in Uyo that could define his team’s legacy.

‘We look forward to a grand match against Nigeria in Uyo,’ he said earlier in the week. And with everything on the line, a grand match is exactly what the world should expect.
