MOTM Onyedika: ‘These are moments I’ve been working towards all my life’

Raphael Onyedika delivered a performance to remember as Nigeria sealed top spot in Group C with a commanding 3–1 victory over Uganda at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

The midfielder, who was named Man of the Match, struck twice in the second half to secure the Super Eagles’ third win in as many games, officially ending Uganda’s campaign at the 35th Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria, runners-up in the 2023 edition, had already shown their strength with victories over Tanzania and Tunisia, and they took control of this contest in the 28th minute.

Paul Onuachu opened the scoring with a close-range finish after Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s precise assist, a goal that came after sustained pressure and a fine save moments earlier from Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Uganda’s hopes of a comeback were dealt a major blow in the 56th minute when Salim Magoola was sent off for handball.

Nigeria capitalised quickly, with Onyedika doubling the lead six minutes later, finishing calmly from the right side of the box after being set up by Samuel Chukwueze. The pair combined again just five minutes later, Onyedika converting from the centre of the area to make it 3–0.

Despite being reduced to ten men, Uganda continued to fight and were rewarded in the 75th minute when Rogers Mato pulled one back, slotting home after Allan Okello’s through ball. Nigeria, however, managed the closing stages with professionalism, making substitutions to preserve their advantage and see out the match.

Speaking after his standout display, Onyedika reflected on the journey to this moment: ‘Thank you everyone. I feel very happy and I can’t really explain how I feel in this moment. These are moments I’ve been working towards all my life, and I’m happy that things are starting to come under control.

‘It’s the same as for any other player, when you’re not playing, you have to stay focused, keep working hard and wait for your opportunity. It’s about being ready when that opportunity comes, performing whenever the coach calls on you, because in the end it’s the coach who decides who plays.

‘It feels good, but it’s also tough because of the standards and demands we set in training and in games. Eric Chelle expects a lot from the players and we push everyone. It’s amazing.’

Nigeria’s emphatic win ensures they finish Group C with maximum points, while Uganda bow out of the competition after a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful campaign.
