Onuachu Becomes Nigeria’s 70th AFCON Goalscorer

Paul Onuachu has etched his name into Nigerian football history by becoming the 70th Nigerian player to score at the Africa Cup of Nations, according to OptaJean.

The 31-year-old Trabzonspor forward struck Nigeria’s opener in their 3–1 victory over Uganda in their final Group C game of the ongoing 35th AFCON.

Onuachu’s goal arrived in the 28th minute, finishing off a move created by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s assist. It was a landmark moment for the striker, who finally opened his AFCON account on his ninth appearance at the tournament.

Since making his international debut in March 2019 during Nigeria’s 3–1 win over Seychelles in AFCON qualifying, Onuachu has now scored four goals in 28 appearances for the Super Eagles.

His strike also underlines Nigeria’s remarkable depth of attacking talent, as the country has now produced more individual AFCON goalscorers than any other nation in the competition’s history.
