AFCON 2025: Nigeria Sweat Over Alebiosu and Dessers Ahead of Knockouts

Nigeria’s perfect run in the group stage of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations has been tempered by injury concerns ahead of the knockout rounds.
Debutant Ryan Alebiosu sustained a deep cut on his right leg during the Super Eagles’ 3–1 victory over Uganda in their final Group C qualifier on Tuesday.
According to the team’s media office, there is uncertainty over his availability for the remainder of the tournament, with medical staff continuing to assess the extent of the injury.
Meanwhile, striker Cyriel Dessers is facing a thigh problem and is scheduled to undergo a scan on Wednesday to determine the severity. His condition adds to Nigeria’s fitness worries as they prepare for the Round of 16.
Despite these setbacks, Nigeria confirmed their dominance in the group phase, finishing with a 100% record from three matches. The Super Eagles will now face the third-placed team from Group F in the next round, aiming to carry their momentum forward while managing key player absences.
