Senegal coach Thiaw risks World Cup ban after AFCON 2025 final chaos
Senegal manager Pape Thiaw could be banned from the touchline at this summer’s World Cup following chaotic scenes in Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco.
Thiaw, who guided Senegal to a 1-0 extra-time victory to secure their second AFCON title, is under scrutiny after ordering his players to leave the pitch in stoppage time.
The extraordinary incident came after Morocco were awarded a controversial penalty in the 98th minute, moments after Senegal had a goal disallowed for a contentious foul.
Most of the Senegal squad followed their coach’s instructions and walked off, prompting riot police to intervene as angry fans attempted to invade the pitch. After a 17-minute delay, Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missed the penalty, and the game resumed. Pape Gueye’s superb strike in extra-time sealed Senegal’s triumph.
Instead of basking in the celebrations, Thiaw now faces disciplinary action. The 44-year-old is expected to receive a touchline ban, which would apply to Senegal’s next competitive fixtures, beginning with their World Cup opener against France in New York.
The African champions are also set to face Norway and one of FIFA’s intercontinental play-off winners (Bolivia, Iraq, or Suriname) in Group I.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who attended the final in Rabat, condemned the incident.
‘The deplorable scenes we witnessed must never be repeated. The competent disciplinary bodies of CAF must take appropriate action,” he said, describing the behaviour of some Senegalese players and staff as ‘unacceptable.’
CAF also issued a statement, strongly criticising the conduct of players and officials.
‘CAF condemns the unacceptable behaviour during the AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal. We are reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action,’ the federation declared.
