Former Goner, Giannis Antetokounmpo Joins Chelsea Women Ownership Group

Greek-Nigerian NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has officially joined the ownership group of Chelsea Women, the reigning champions of the Women’s Super League.

The move expands his growing investment portfolio and underscores his commitment to supporting women’s sports.

Born to Nigerian parents, Antetokounmpo is a close friend of Alexis Ohanian, Reddit co-founder and minority owner of Chelsea Women.

Inspired by Ohanian’s involvement, the ‘Greek Freak’ has purchased his own stake in the club, adding Chelsea to a list of sports investments that already includes Major League Soccer’s Nashville SC, where he and his brothers became minority owners in 2023, and Major League Baseball’s Milwaukee Brewers.

Announcing the news on social media, Antetokounmpo expressed his excitement: ‘I’m proud and honored to partner with my friend @alexisohanian, joining the ownership group of @ChelseaFCW, a historic club built on passion, excellence, and a winning culture. Ohanian, who acquired a 10 percent stake in Chelsea Women in May 2025, previously emphasized his belief in the future of women’s sports, saying he wanted to help the club become America’s favorite WSL team.

Interestingly, Antetokounmpo’s football loyalties have shifted over the years. Once a devoted Arsenal fan who idolized Thierry Henry, he admitted in 2020 that his heart was with the Gunners, though he also admired PSG during Zlatan Ibrahimović’s era.

More recently, however, he revealed that his allegiance had faded, noting in a conversation on X that he now leans toward Real Madrid.

With this latest investment, Antetokounmpo cements his place among global athletes who are shaping the future of sports ownership, blending basketball stardom with a passion for football and a vision for women’s sport.
