FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifier: Ifeanyi’s Header Hands Falconets First Leg Win Over Senegal

Kindness Ifeanyi’s second-half header handed Nigeria’s Falconets a narrow 1–0 victory over Senegal in the first leg of their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifying tie on Saturday.

The two-time World Cup silver medalists dominated proceedings at the MKO Abiola Stadium, creating several chances but failing to convert until the 51st minute.

Substitute Ifeanyi rose highest to meet a corner from defender Tumininu Adeshina, powering the ball past goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye to give Nigeria the breakthrough.

Nigeria’s attacking intent was clear from the start, with Shakirat Moshood and Taiwo Afolabi orchestrating moves that troubled the Senegalese defence.

Moshood came close in the 12th minute, weaving past defenders before her cross was cleared, while Ndiaye produced a fine save to deny her point-blank effort midway through the first half.

Senegal threatened briefly through Sokhna Nogaye, who nearly capitalised on a defensive lapse, but Nigerian goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma reacted swiftly to keep the scoreline level.

The visitors’ Khady Thiandoume was booked for a reckless challenge in the 25th minute, highlighting the intensity of the contest.

Nigeria’s top striker Janet Akokoromowei was forced off with injury in the first half, but the Falconets continued to press. Adeshina struck the crossbar directly from a corner in the 73rd minute, while Moshood was again denied from close range as Nigeria sought to extend their lead.

The tie remains delicately poised ahead of the return leg in Dakar next Saturday, where the winner will advance to the final round of the qualification series for this year’s World Cup in Poland.
