Chelle: My Agents Proposed Me to Olympique Marseille, Not Me
Eric Chelle, current coach of the Super Eagles, has clarified the recent speculation linking him to Olympique Marseille.
Speaking on the Histoires de foot podcast, Chelle explained that his new agency had reached out to clubs in Europe, including Marseille, as part of their efforts to advance his career. He stressed, however, that he personally had no contact with the Ligue 1 side.
‘What happened is that I signed with a sports agency to grow as a coach,’ Chelle said. ‘My agents decided, like all agents, to probe certain clubs in Europe, especially in France. At that moment, OM was looking for a coach, so my agency got in touch with the club to propose me. But me, I didn’t do anything else.’
Chelle emphasized that he never communicated with Marseille directly and that any talk of him being on a shortlist was purely rumor.
‘You have to ask my agent if he was in contact and what position I was in this list, if I was in this list. But I didn’t do anything, I didn’t say anything.’
Still, Chelle admitted that the idea of coaching Marseille appeals to him, given his ties to the region and his past as a supporter of the club.
‘As a former supporter of Olympique de Marseille, because I played a few games in this stadium with the ultras, it’s true that if you ask me the question, I would like to coach OM. Of course. But in no case did I communicate about it, in no case did I ask to be communicated about it.’
