Roger Milla Calls Title Reversal ‘Nonsense’ as Mido Labels CAF a ‘Joke’

The Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) appeal panel has ignited controversy across the continent by stripping Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarding it to Morocco.

The ruling, unprecedented in AFCON history, has drawn sharp criticism from two of Africa’s most iconic football figures: Roger Milla and Mido.

Cameroonian legend Roger Milla expressed outrage in L’Équipe.

‘It’s a shame, nonsense. We’ve never seen anything like this. What do we do with the medals? Shall we give them back?

‘It is a way of asking footballers to no longer give consideration to the AFCON. It has never been done!’ Milla questioned the practicality of reclaiming medals and trophies, insisting Senegal will not return them, and warned that the credibility of the competition itself is at stake.

Egyptian great Mido was equally scathing, taking to social media to denounce CAF’s ruling.

‘The CAF is a real joke!! The decision to take the Cup away from Senegal and give it to Morocco is the biggest scandal in the history of football. This decision will divide Africa… We are seen as idiots, a corrupt continent. Africa deserves better!,’ he wrote.

While critical of CAF, Mido clarified his respect for Morocco.

‘I’m not against Morocco, I love this country and its people… but you lost on the ground. Senegal was the best team and deserves this title. I wanted to congratulate my Moroccan friends, but I can’t congratulate someone for something won in the office and not on the field.’

The ruling, delivered nearly two months after the AFCON final, has left African football deeply divided, with questions over governance, sporting integrity, and the precedent of overturning results after a tournament’s conclusion.
