Guinea-Bissau Coach: ‘Beating Nigeria Difficult, But Not Impossible’

Guinea-Bissau head coach Emiliano Té says his team will approach Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria with confidence and the determination to claim all three points.

The Djurtus host the Super Eagles at the 24 de Setembro Stadium in Bissau, with both teams looking to make it two wins from two in Group L.

Té acknowledged the quality of the Nigerian side but insisted Guinea-Bissau are capable of producing another victory over the Super Eagles.

‘We know it’s difficult to beat Nigeria, but it’s not impossible,’ Té said at Monday’s pre-match press conference.

The coach dismissed the relevance of Nigeria’s superior head-to-head record, noting that the circumstances surrounding Tuesday’s encounter are different from previous meetings.

‘We are not going to look at the history of the clashes between the two teams. They have the advantage, with three wins, while we only managed one, but that’s part of history.

‘Today, the motivation is different, the moment is different and the goals are also different. Therefore, we will face this game with great serenity and courage to win the three points.’

Té also demanded concentration and discipline from his players throughout the encounter, describing Nigeria as one of the strongest teams in Group L.

‘I believe that all the players will be focused, because this is a high-level game, between two teams with excellent players. Attention must be redoubled and motivation will be high.

‘The squad is prepared for this challenge. The message is clear: focus and attitude.’

Guinea-Bissau defeated Tanzania 2-0 in their opening qualifier, while Nigeria came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo.

Both teams therefore have three points heading into the potentially decisive Bissau showdown.
