Weah Slams CAF, Demands Senegal’s Victory Be Restored
George Weah, former Ballon d’Or winner and ex-President of Liberia, has publicly rejected the CAF ruling that stripped Senegal of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded the championship to Morocco.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook account, he emphasized that the referee’s authority on the pitch is final and cannot be undermined after the match has concluded. He cited Article 5 of FIFA’s Laws of the Game, which grants referees full authority over match decisions.
Weah expressed solidarity with Senegal, affirming that the Lions’ victory on the field should stand. He argued that the CAF Appeals Panel’s intervention contradicts the fundamental principles of football governance.
Senegal’s federation has already announced plans to escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Weah also addressed false claims circulating online that suggested he supported CAF’s decision.
He firmly denied these reports, calling them misleading and urging those spreading such misinformation to stop. He reiterated his call for CAS and other authorities to annul what he described as a ‘travesty of justice.’
The case now moves toward CAS, where Senegal hopes to have the ruling overturned.
Meanwhile, Morocco remains officially recognized as champion by CAF, though the legitimacy of that title is under heavy dispute. The controversy has ignited debate across African football, raising questions about governance, fairness, and respect for the authority of referees on the field.
