Pay Dispute Reportedly Costs Ghana the Chance to Hire Hervé Renard
Ghana may have missed out on securing celebrated French coach Hervé Renard due to a disagreement over salary, according to Citi Sports.
Renard, who has twice won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire, was reportedly interested in leading the Black Stars.
According to Ghanaian coach Christopher Nimley, Renard was prepared to leave his role in Saudi Arabia to take charge of Ghana’s national team.
He had expressed a long-term commitment, aiming to guide the Black Stars to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and compete for two AFCON titles.
However, negotiations broke down after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) allegedly offered Renard a monthly salary of $50,000, far below the $150,000 figure that the government had already approved.
Nimley described the offer as ‘disrespectful’ and suggested it showed the GFA had no real intention of hiring Renard.
He pointed out the inconsistency by noting that Ghana’s current coach, Otto Addo, receives $50,000, questioning why Renard, with his proven track record, would be offered the same.
As a result, Renard is no longer expected to take up the Black Stars job, leaving Ghana without the experienced coach many hoped would lead them back to international success.
