Okon Smashes 200m Personal Best With 20.27s at Tom Jones Memorial
Breaks Into Nigeria’s All-Time Top 10 With 20.27s
Israel Okon delivered a breakthrough performance at the Tom Jones Memorial meet on Friday night, running a lifetime best of 20.27 seconds to win the men’s 200m Invite.
The time marked a huge improvement of 0.36 seconds from his previous personal best of 20.63, catapulting him to number 10 on Nigeria’s all-time list.
Okon’s run is also the fastest by a Nigerian this year, surpassing the 20.54 clocked by Samuel Ogazi in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on April 10.
He was not the only Nigerian in action at Gainesville. Joshua Caleb ran 20.73 to finish 14th overall in the 200m Invite classification, while Olaolu Olatunde was unable to complete his race.
