Godfred Breaks 8m Barrier for Third Straight Season

Nigerian long jumper Charles Edward Godfred continued his impressive run of form by surpassing the 8m mark for the third consecutive season at the Tom Jones Memorial meet on Friday.

The 22-year-old leapt to 8.08m to claim silver, matching his third-best career distance.

Godfred opened his series with 7.57m before improving to 7.80m in the second round. He then soared to 8.01m in the third, surpassing his previous season’s best of 7.93m.

After a dip to 7.75m in the fourth round, he rebounded with another big effort, landing at 8.08m. The mark sits just behind his career-best 8.16m achieved at the 2024 Nigerian Championships in Benin and his 8.10m jump in 2025.

The competition was fierce, with Jeremiah Davis also recording 8.08m and edging Godfred on countback to take gold. Jordan Turner, who matched the distance, was pushed to bronze under the same rule.

Godfred’s ability to consistently break the 8m barrier highlights his growing potential on the international stage.

With three straight seasons of elite-level performances, he is positioning himself as a strong contender for podium finishes at upcoming global championships.
