Archery Development Clinic Begins Across Lagos Education Districts
The Lagos State Sports Commission, in collaboration with the Lagos State Archery Association, has rolled out a Mentorship Archery Sport Development Clinic across public secondary schools in the state’s six educational districts.
The initiative, which commenced at Sango Junior Secondary School within the Dairy Farms School Complex, Agege, Education District 1, is designed to popularize archery within the school system while identifying and nurturing grassroots talent.
Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Archery Association, Mr. Emmanuel Oyeleke, explained that the programme adopts a train-the-trainer model, equipping 20 Games Masters and Mistresses in each district with the skills to introduce archery to pupils.
‘The purpose of this clinic is to introduce the sport and develop talent from the grassroots in every school across Lagos State. Once these instructors are skilled, they will take over the training of students in their respective schools,’ he said.
To further entrench the sport, archery centres will be established in each education district, complementing the state’s existing facility at Teslim Balogun Stadium. Exceptional talents identified during the clinics will be invited to the Zen Lagos Archery Arena for advanced high-performance training.
‘This is a whole encompassing programme,’ Oyeleke added. ‘After this introduction, we’re going to establish an archery centre in each education district where all secondary schools can train and gain more skills. At Teslim Balogun Stadium, we’ll invite kids who show exceptional talent to get more exposure to how archery is being done.’
The mentorship programme marks a significant step in Lagos State’s efforts to diversify sports participation and create pathways for young athletes to excel in less traditional disciplines such as archery.
