Martinez Defends Ronaldo’s Leadership Despite Missed Chances

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has defended his decision to keep Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch until the 64th minute during the recent friendly against Nigeria, despite the forward missing several clear scoring opportunities.

Ronaldo’s performance drew criticism from fans and media, who questioned his sharpness ahead of the World Cup after a series of wasted chances in front of goal.

However, Martinez emphasized that the veteran striker’s value to the team extends beyond his finishing ability.

‘Cristiano’s leadership and presence on the field are vital,’ Martinez explained. ‘Even when he isn’t scoring, he influences the game and inspires his teammates. That’s why I kept him on longer.’
