Merson: ‘Mbappé Will Light Up World Cup 2026, Backs Kane for Golden Boot
Arda Güler Tipped as Breakout Star

Former England international Paul Merson has shared his predictions for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, offering bold insights into who he believes will dominate the tournament.
Speaking on the Golden Ball award, Merson declared: ‘Kylian Mbappé is my top pick. He will score heavily and lead France deep into the competition. If you don’t reach the semi-finals or finals, you don’t win this award, it’s that simple.’
While Mbappé is his clear favorite, Merson also mentioned Spain’s Pedri, England’s Harry Kane, Argentina’s Lionel Messi, and Brazil’s Raphinha as possible challengers.
On the Golden Boot, Merson tipped Kane to come out on top.
‘Harry Kane is the one for me,’ he said. ‘The Golden Boot often comes down to group-stage matches, and Kane has the consistency to take advantage. Mbappé will be close, Haaland could surprise, and Messi always has a chance. But Ronaldo and Gonçalo Ramos are out of the picture for me, their form just isn’t there.’
Turning to breakout stars, Merson singled out Turkey’s Arda Güler.
‘He’s the standout U-23 player,’ Merson explained. ‘His creativity and impact for Turkiye will make him one of the most exciting players to watch.’
He also highlighted Pedri and Lamine Yamal of Spain, Desire Doué of France, and England’s Elliot Anderson as other young talents to watch.
Merson further identified Colombia and Mexico as dangerous outsiders.
‘Colombia have real strength with players like Luis Díaz, and Mexico will thrive with home advantage and their ability to adapt to humid conditions. Don’t underestimate them,’ he warned.
