Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has issued an apology to Nigerian fans following comments made during Fox’s coverage of the FIFA World Cup opener between the United States and Paraguay.
The controversy arose when streamer IShowSpeed appeared on set wearing a US jersey paired with Nigerian national team shorts.
Zlatan Ibrahimović joked about the unusual combination, while Henry remarked that mixing kits is often considered bad luck, adding: ‘I love Nigeria, but today is US for you.’
The comment quickly spread across social media, drawing criticism from Nigerian supporters who felt slighted.
Henry later clarified his remarks, stressing that no offence was intended and that his comment was about breaking kit sets rather than Nigeria itself.
‘I need to clarify something because I don’t think people understand when you say stuff sometimes or when a joke is a joke,’ Henry explained.
‘It could have been the shorts of France, Italy or Spain, I would have said the same thing. I even said I love Naija, and I do. I have mad respect for Nigeria and the people there.’
