Nigeria Ranked Second Among World Cup Absentees
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been ranked as the second-highest FIFA team absent from the 2026 World Cup, underscoring the scale of their qualification disappointment.
Currently placed 26th in the FIFA Men’s World Ranking, Nigeria trail only Denmark (21st) among notable absentees from the expanded 48-nation tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The Super Eagles’ qualification journey ended in heartbreak. After finishing second in Group C behind South Africa, they defeated Gabon in the playoff semi-final but fell to DR Congo on penalties in the decisive playoff final.
Their subsequent appeal, alleging ineligible players in Congo’s squad, was dismissed.
This marks Nigeria’s second consecutive absence from the global finals, having also missed the 2022 edition. Former England captain John Terry described their absence as ‘a big miss,’ praising Nigeria’s talent and potential impact on the competition.
Despite missing out, Nigeria remain Africa’s third-highest-ranked team, behind Morocco (7th globally) and Senegal, with Algeria and Egypt completing the continent’s top five.
Globally, Argentina lead the rankings, followed by Spain, France, England, and Portugal.
The next FIFA World Ranking will be released on July 20, 2026, immediately after the World Cup final, offering a fresh look at the global football landscape.
