‘He Wants To Be on The Pitch at All Times’: Saha Urges Ronaldo to Adapt for Portugal’s World Cup Success

Former France striker Louis Saha has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to show greater tactical flexibility, warning that the Portugal captain ‘needs to be saved from himself’ if his team is to thrive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their Group K opener, despite dominating possession. Joao Neves gave the European side an early lead, but Yoane Wissa struck in stoppage time to secure a dramatic equalizer.

At 41, Ronaldo was making his sixth World Cup appearance but endured a frustrating evening. He managed only two off-target shots and registered the fewest touches of any Portuguese player, appearing isolated from the team’s attacking rhythm.

Saha, speaking after the match, highlighted Ronaldo’s determination to play every minute in pursuit of records but cautioned that Portugal’s success depends on maintaining high tempo and energy.

‘He wants to be on the pitch at all times, but the team needs rotation and dynamism,’ Saha said.

Ronaldo’s goal drought in major tournaments has now stretched to 10 matches, including Euro 2024.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez defended his decision to keep the veteran forward on the field, citing his experience and ability to draw defenders.

‘Cristiano remains vital in goal-scoring situations and his presence changes how opponents defend,’ Martinez explained.

Portugal will look to bounce back when they face World Cup debutants Uzbekistan on June 23 in Houston.
