Man City to Pay Chelsea €20m for Maresca, Third-Most Expensive Coach Transfer in History
Manchester City will pay Chelsea €20 million in compensation to appoint Enzo Maresca as their new manager, a fee that places the Italian coach among the most expensive managerial transfers in football history.
City moved swiftly to secure Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure after a decade of dominance at the Etihad Stadium.
According to Di Marzio, the €20m compensation agreed with Chelsea elevates Maresca to third place on the all-time list of costliest coaching moves.
The record list of expensive managerial transfers includes José Mourinho’s €16m move from Inter to Real Madrid, André Villas-Boas’ €15m switch from Porto to Chelsea, and Julian Nagelsmann’s €25m transfer from RB Leipzig to Bayern Munich.
Graham Potter’s €23m move from Brighton to Chelsea also ranks above Maresca, while his €20m fee now surpasses Mourinho’s earlier transfers and places him behind only Nagelsmann and Potter.
Maresca, who left Chelsea on January 1, now joins this elite group of managers whose moves commanded major transfer fees.
His arrival marks the beginning of Manchester City’s post-Guardiola era, with expectations high that he can sustain the club’s success and usher in a new chapter of dominance.
