Awoniyi: ‘I’m Very Happy to Complete Coventry Move, I Can’t Wait to Get Started’
Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed his excitement after completing his permanent transfer from Nottingham Forest to Coventry City, declaring that he cannot wait to begin his new challenge in the Premier League.
‘I’m very happy to complete my move to Coventry City,’ Awoniyi said. ‘I am very excited about this season, and I can’t wait to get started.’
The 29-year-old Nigerian striker also praised Coventry’s achievement in winning promotion from the Championship last season and said he is eager to join his new teammates.
‘I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates. I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship, they were incredible and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new season,’ he added.
Awoniyi joins Coventry after four seasons in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest, where he scored 21 league goals in 90 appearances and 23 goals in 103 matches across all competitions.
The striker began his professional career at Liverpool before gaining experience through loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron and Gent. He later moved to the Bundesliga, spending time with Mainz and Union Berlin before joining Union permanently in 2021.
His impressive 2021/22 campaign, when he scored 20 goals including four in the UEFA Conference League, attracted Forest, who broke their transfer record to sign him in 2022.
Awoniyi scored 11 goals in his first season at Forest, helping the club avoid relegation after returning to the Premier League and reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals. He was also part of the Forest side that finished seventh and qualified for European football in the 2024/25 season.
