‘Defeat Is Not Funny’: Duplantis Rejuvenated, Eyes World Record in Paris

Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis enters the Paris Diamond League pole vault competition with renewed focus and determination, declaring himself ‘ultra-motivated’ and ‘hungry for victory’ after a period of mixed performances.

‘Defeat is not funny! Ever since I was a kid, losing has been the end of the world every time. I just don’t allow myself to lose,’ Duplantis said.

Reflecting on his recent setback in Stockholm, he admitted his mind had been elsewhere as he prepared for his wedding.

‘I don’t want to make excuses, but my mind wasn’t fully focused on the pole vault at that point. Today, I feel very focused and rejuvenated. I am opening a new and beautiful chapter of my life. I’m ultra-motivated, I’m hungry for victory… and I am a married man!’

Duplantis acknowledged that his recent performances have been ‘quite mediocre,’ but insisted that Paris marks a fresh start to his season.

He expressed confidence in competing under hot conditions, noting that the real challenge lies in managing fatigue across multiple jumps.

‘You have to stay extremely focused with each attempt,’ he explained.

‘I have the world record in mind, even if the main thing is still the victory. With all these top athletes in attendance, I wouldn’t be surprised if we end up attacking the world record.’
