Can Tobi Amusan Deliver Again at Hayward Field?

All eyes will be on Tobi Amusan this weekend when the 29‑year‑old Nigerian lines up for the 100m hurdles against reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell in what has been dubbed ‘a world record race.’

Russell moved just two hundredths of a second behind Amusan’s 12.12 seconds world record run, storming to a 12.14 finish at the Xiamen Diamond League meeting in China last May.

The American first signaled her intent in 2025 when she ran 12.17, and has since gone even faster. The two have not met since then, with Amusan running 12.28 twice after placing second behind Russell in China.

Amusan has shown consistency this year, fueling belief she could fulfill Colin Jackson’s prediction of her running 12 seconds flat, a mark that would translate to a new world record.

Russell, meanwhile, is confident she can break the record herself, and at 26 years old, it will be hard to bet against her.

Both athletes return to a ground where they have achieved some of their biggest feats.

For Amusan, Hayward Field in Eugene is hallowed territory.

She won her first and only NCAA outdoor title there in 2017, made history as the first Nigerian woman to win a World outdoor title on the same track, and set the world record that still stands today.

It was also in Eugene that Amusan became the second woman in Diamond League history to win a hat‑trick of high hurdles titles.

Russell also has fond memories of Eugene, having won her two American championships titles there in 2024 and 2025.

The stage is thus set for what can be termed the mother of all races, a clash between two of the finest hurdlers in history, with the world record once again under threat.
