BalogunGate: England Push FIFA for Quansah Red Card Pardon
England are pressing FIFA to overturn Jarell Quansah’s suspension ahead of their World Cup quarter-final against Norway, citing the precedent set in the case of USMNT striker Folarin Balogun.
Quansah, who started at right back against Mexico, was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge, becoming the first England player to be dismissed at a World Cup since Wayne Rooney in 2006.
His dismissal has drawn heightened scrutiny after FIFA controversially suspended Balogun’s red-card ban, allowing him to play against Belgium following intervention from U.S. President Donald Trump.
British lawmakers have now stepped in. Labour MP Noah Law wrote directly to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, acknowledging Quansah’s red card was ‘correct’ but urging FIFA to apply the same leniency shown to Balogun.
‘The integrity of any major international tournament depends not only on players and referees respecting the rules, but also on those rules being applied equally to every participating nation,’ Law stated.
The issue has sparked wider political and public debate. Dame Caroline Dinenage, chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, has called on FIFA to urgently explain its decision-making process.
Meanwhile, some England supporters have humorously suggested a ‘Trump-style battle’ with FIFA, even calling for government officials to intervene.
England manager Thomas Tuchel, facing a selection headache at right back, voiced frustration at the inconsistency.
‘Let’s be clear: it wasn’t a red card. VAR got involved. The decision has already been made. Who overturns that decision, when, and on what grounds? It seems strange to me. We want consistency,’ Tuchel said after England’s 3-2 win over Mexico.
With a smile, he added: ‘Do we appeal? Should Harry Kane ask President Trump? Maybe!’
As England prepare for their clash with Norway on July 11, the spotlight remains firmly on FIFA’s disciplinary process and whether Quansah will be granted the same reprieve as Balogun.
