Super Eagles Defender Benjamin Fredrick Extends Brentford Stay Until 2030
Brentford have confirmed that Nigerian defender Benjamin Fredrick has been promoted to the club’s first-team squad ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season after signing a new four-year contract, with the club holding the option to extend the deal by an additional year.
The 21-year-old centre-back, who has joined head coach Keith Andrews’ squad for pre-season preparations, has been rewarded for his impressive development since arriving at the club and is now set to compete for a place in the senior team.
Announcing the deal, Andrews expressed confidence in Fredrick’s potential and said the defender has earned the opportunity to establish himself at Premier League level.
“We’re delighted that Benji has signed a new deal and is going to be part of the group this season because we see a lot of potential in him and where we can take his game,” Andrews said.
The Brentford manager highlighted Fredrick’s international experience with Nigeria and praised the progress he made during his loan spell in Belgium before injury curtailed his campaign.
“He’s already played senior international football and was a big part of Nigeria’s team during their World Cup qualifying campaign. Last season he had a productive loan in Belgium that was unfortunately cut short by injury,” Andrews added.
The head coach said Fredrick’s immediate objective will be to regain full fitness and establish himself within the first-team environment after spending several months on the sidelines.
“The first step for Benji is to integrate consistently into the squad. His last game was in the middle of November, so he has had a long period out through injury. He now has to challenge his teammates and show the ability and personality that I know he has,” Andrews said.
Fredrick began his football journey at Simoiben Football Academy in Kaduna before spending the 2021/22 season with Abubakar Bukola Saraki FC. He later joined Nasarawa United, where his performances in the Nigeria Premier Football League and at the 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, where Nigeria finished third, attracted Brentford’s attention.
He initially joined Brentford B on loan in August 2023 before the move was made permanent in April 2024 following an impressive debut season. During his time with the club’s development side, Fredrick featured in several Premier League and FA Cup matchday squads while helping Brentford reach the Premier League Cup final and win the Under-21 Professional Development League national title.
His performances earned him Brentford B’s Players’ Player of the Year award in 2025, and later that year he made his senior debut for Nigeria in the Unity Cup final victory over Jamaica at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Fredrick spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Belgian side FCV Dender, making 15 appearances in the Belgian Pro League and Croky Cup before a knee injury brought his spell to an early end. Despite the setback, he remained an important figure for Nigeria, starting the final four matches of the country’s successful 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign and featuring throughout the African play-offs.
Brentford B head coach Sam Saunders also welcomed the defender’s promotion, describing Fredrick as a model professional whose steady improvement has been evident since joining the club.
“Benji has been an absolute pleasure to work with. I’m incredibly proud of the progress he has made and the level he has reached during his time at Brentford. He is an outstanding character, highly coachable and possesses excellent one-on-one defensive qualities. We are excited to see how far he can go in his career,” Saunders said.
Fredrick’s promotion marks another significant milestone in his career and offers the Nigerian international the opportunity to establish himself in Brentford’s senior squad as the club prepares for the new Premier League season.
