Egypt FA Reveals Plans to Bid for 2028 AFCON Ahead of Future World Cup Ambition
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has revealed plans to submit a bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations as part of the country’s wider ambition to stage the FIFA World Cup in the future.
EFA board member Hamada El Sherbini said Egypt is continuing to invest in football infrastructure and sporting facilities as it prepares to compete for the hosting rights of major international tournaments.
Speaking on Mega FM radio, El Sherbini said Egypt’s impressive run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has strengthened the country’s determination to build on its football progress and pursue greater opportunities on the global stage.
Egypt reached the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup before being eliminated by Argentina, marking one of the nation’s strongest performances in the history of the competition.
According to El Sherbini, the response to the national team’s achievement has encouraged further investment in Egyptian football, while he also praised the recognition given to the squad by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi following the tournament.
He explained that hosting the Africa Cup of Nations would represent an important step towards Egypt’s long-term objective of submitting a bid for the FIFA World Cup.
‘We hope to complete the stadium file, and then apply to host the World Cup and the African Cup of Nations. We have hosted the African Cup of Nations more than once, and the next step is to bid to host the 2028 edition,’ El Sherbini said.
Egypt has previously hosted the Africa Cup of Nations on multiple occasions and believes its experience, facilities and football tradition place it in a strong position to compete for future hosting rights.
