Retired D’Tigresses Star Sarah Ogoke Joins Nigeria Diaspora Sports Development Initiative
Leads Basketball Showcase at Nigeria Diaspora Multi-Sports Event
Former Nigeria women’s basketball captain and Olympian Dr. Sarah Ogoke will spearhead the basketball programme at the Nigeria Diaspora Talents Development Committee (NDTDC) Multi-Sports Event scheduled to take place on Friday, July 17, at Hertfordshire Sports Village in Hatfield.
Dr. Ogoke, who retired from international basketball earlier this year after an illustrious career with D’Tigress, will oversee Team Diaspora basketball drills and lead an exhibition game featuring players from across the Nigerian diaspora seeking opportunities to showcase their talent.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest female basketball players, Dr. Ogoke made history as the first woman to win five consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles.
During more than a decade representing Nigeria, she established herself as one of the continent’s most influential basketball figures while helping elevate the profile of the women’s game across Africa.
The basketball exhibition forms part of the NDTDC’s broader initiative to identify, develop and integrate talented Nigerian athletes in the diaspora into the country’s national sports system.
Organisers believe basketball has emerged as one of the strongest areas of interest, with encouraging participation from athletes eager to contribute to Nigeria’s future national teams.
Chairman of the Nigeria Diaspora Talents Development Committee, Dr. Tunde Adelakun, described Dr. Ogoke’s participation as a major boost to the initiative and a reflection of the committee’s commitment to developing Nigerian sports through the expertise of accomplished athletes.
“To have Dr. Sarah at Friday’s event underlines our commitment to show the sporting world that we have great stars like her, and that stars like her are willing and able to give their time and skill to help develop the future of sports in Nigeria,” Adelakun said.
Beyond her achievements on the court, Dr. Ogoke is a medical surgeon based in the United States. She currently serves as Vice Chair of the NDTDC and as the United States Project Lead for the committee’s Diaspora Athletes Monitoring, Mentoring and Support (DAMMS) Unit, where she plays a key role in mentoring and supporting Nigerian athletes abroad.
Participants in the basketball programme will have the opportunity to train under Dr. Ogoke and interact with one of Nigeria’s most decorated basketball players as part of the committee’s talent identification and development efforts.
The multi-sports event will feature exhibitions in basketball, football, athletics, taekwondo, netball, table tennis and golf.
