Fully Fit Ihezuo Targets WAFCON Glory with Super Falcons
Super Falcons forward Chinwendu Ihezuo has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to successfully defend its Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title despite predicting a much more competitive tournament when the 14th edition kicks off in Morocco from July 26 to August 16.
Ihezuo believes the stakes will be significantly higher this time, with qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup adding extra motivation for all participating teams.
Speaking ahead of the continental showpiece, the former Nigeria junior international cautioned against complacency, insisting that the Super Falcons must approach every match with focus and determination as defending champions.
“This tournament will be tougher, much tougher. Last year, there was no FIFA Women’s World Cup ticket to fight for. When the first blast of the whistle goes on July 26, the focus of all the teams will be on the World Cup ticket. As defending champions, we cannot afford to be over-confident,” Ihezuo said.
Despite anticipating fierce competition, the Pachuca Tuzas forward expressed faith in the quality, unity and resilience within the Nigerian squad to successfully defend their continental crown while securing qualification for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“However, I believe in the team that we have, the oneness amongst us, our hard work, and the courage that keeps us going. We are not only going for a World Cup ticket but also to retain the Cup,” she added.
Ihezuo also provided an encouraging update on her fitness after spending time on the sidelines through injury, revealing that she has fully recovered and is eager to return to international duty.
“God has been great and I give Him all the glory. I am now healed and fully recovered. Presently, my club is in pre-season, but I am ready to fly to Morocco and team up with the Super Falcons of Africa to make Nigeria proud.”
The return of the prolific striker is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s attacking options as the Super Falcons pursue a record-extending 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title while seeking one of the qualification tickets to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
