2026 Commonwealth Games: Veteran Paralympian Iyiazi Leads Nigeria’s Gold Medal Hopes on Monday

Team Nigeria will look to veteran para-athlete Eucharia Iyiazi to deliver the country’s fourth gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games when athletics and para-athletics begin at Scotstoun Stadium on Monday.

Iyiazi is scheduled to compete in the women’s Shot Put F57 final at 19:05 Nigerian time, where she will face competitors from Australia, England, Canada, Wales, India and Ghana.

Australia’s Ainsley Hooker, Nigeria’s Iyiazi and England’s Ozioma Nlewedum are among the leading names in the event.

The 52-year-old Nigerian is one of the country’s most decorated Paralympians, having competed at four Paralympic Games and won two gold and three bronze medals.

She claimed two gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics in the shot put and discus throw, setting world and Paralympic records in the F58 class.

Iyiazi also won bronze medals at the 2012 London, 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. She remains the defending Commonwealth champion in the event after winning gold in the women’s F55-57 shot put at Birmingham 2022 with a throw of 10.03 metres.

Team Nigeria, who have already won three gold medals at Glasgow 2026, will hope the experienced Iyiazi can add another title to her remarkable career and move the country closer to its medal target.
