2026 Commonwealth Games: Nathaniel Targets Historic 400m Hurdles Gold in Glasgow
Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel will bid to make history on Friday when he lines up as the favourite in the men’s 400m hurdles final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with victory set to earn the country its first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the event.
The 23-year-old heads the field on both personal and season’s best, boasting a lifetime best of 47.11 seconds, set last year, which places him among the 10 fastest men in history.
His 2026 best of 47.37 puts him joint-third on the world list alongside American Trevor Bassitt and Brazil’s Matheus Lima, behind only world record holder Karsten Warholm and Olympic bronze medalist Alison dos Santos.
Nathaniel will start from lane six against Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson (48.29), Guernsey’s Alastair Chalmers (48.30), Dominica’s Dennick Luke (48.37), England’s Seamus Derbyshire (48.42) and Jake Minshull (48.53), as well as India’s Yashas Palaksha and Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan.
With no other finalist having broken 48 seconds this season, Nathaniel enters the race with a significant advantage on paper and will be expected to attack strongly from the opening stages.
The final also presents an opportunity for redemption after he finished sixth on his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham in 2022.
Since then, the Nigerian has established himself as one of the world’s leading one-lap hurdlers and a consistent sub-48-second performer. A victory in Glasgow would be the biggest title of his career and make Nathaniel the first Nigerian to win Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s 400m hurdles.
