After World U20 and NCAA 200m Titles, Onwuzurike Seeks Historic Commonwealth Gold
Udodi Onwuzurike will bid to add a Commonwealth Games title to his World Under-20 and NCAA 200m crowns on Friday when he lines up in the men’s 200m final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with an opportunity to become the first Nigerian man to win the event.
The 23-year-old qualified for the final after finishing second in his semifinal in 20.22 seconds and will return to the Commonwealth stage seeking redemption after placing sixth in Birmingham four years ago.
The former World Under-20 champion and 2023 NCAA champion will start from lane eight in a high-quality final led by South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, the fastest qualifier with a 19.74 personal and season’s best.
Dambile reinforced his credentials by clocking 19.82 in the semifinals, the fastest time across the three races. The field also features Canada’s Aaron Brown, Botswana’s Prince Phaezel Selepe, Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor and JeVaughn Powell, Ghana’s Joseph Paul Amoah and Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy.
Onwuzurike’s 19.76 personal best makes him the second-fastest athlete in the field on lifetime bests, behind only Dambile, although his 20.18 season’s best suggests he will need a significant improvement to challenge for gold.
His semifinal run, however, indicated that he is finding his rhythm at the right time. A victory would complete a remarkable progression from World Under-20 champion to NCAA champion and then Commonwealth champion, while making Onwuzurike the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games 200m title.
