Cameroon boosted their hopes of reaching the next stage after edging Nigeria 75-74 in a thrilling overtime contest to take control of Group C in a fiercely contested encounter.
After the teams finished regulation tied at 67-67, Cameroon held their nerve in the extra period, with Eveline Toyounon delivering a sensational all-round performance of 24 points, 17 rebounds and eight assists.
The Indomitable Lionesses capitalised on their height advantage, dominating the boards 61-42 and outscoring Nigeria 42-20 in points in the paint.
Coach Tsafack Lonteu’s effective use of a nine-player rotation also proved decisive as Cameroon secured a hard-fought victory.
Despite the narrow defeat, Nigeria’s Favour Anari remained optimistic about her team’s chances.
‘I’m not really happy about the game, but I know the next game, we’re going to win. We just have to learn from the mistakes that happened tonight. I still believe in my teammates. Next game is a win for sure,’ she said.
