Falconets Begin 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup With 2-0 Defeat To Spain
Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team, the Falconets, began their campaign at the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland on a disappointing note after losing 2-0 to former champions Spain at the Arena Sosnowiec on Monday evening.
The 2022 champions made a fast start and took the lead in the 13th minute when Marisa Garcia calmly slotted the ball past Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma.
The early setback did not deter the Falconets, who responded positively and created a number of opportunities, but they were unable to find an equaliser before half-time.
Coach Moses Aduku’s side returned for the second half with greater intensity and enjoyed periods of control as they pushed forward in search of a leveller. However, Spain’s goalkeeper Lopez stood firm, making important saves to preserve her side’s advantage.
Nigeria continued to commit players forward as the match progressed, but Spain exploited the space left behind by the Falconets in the 72nd minute. Alba Cerrato beat Uzoma to double Spain’s lead and put the European side firmly in control.
The Falconets fought until the final whistle but could not find a way through a well-organised Spanish defence, leaving Nigeria with no points from their opening Group F fixture.
Nigeria must now quickly regroup ahead of their second group match against China PR on Thursday, September 10, with victory becoming crucial to their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.
