Victor Koko Retires After 15-Year Rivers Hoopers Career
Rivers Hoopers captain Victor Anthony Koko has called time on his professional basketball career after a stellar spell that saw him become one of the most decorated players in Nigerian club basketball.
The 6ft 9in centre/power forward, who was born in Port Harcourt, joined Rivers Hoopers in 2009 and went on to become a central figure in the club’s domestic and continental success.
Koko retires as an eight-time Nigerian Premier League champion, winning the title once with Mark Mentors in 2015 and seven times with Rivers Hoopers in 2011, 2012, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2026.
He was also named NPBL Final MVP in 2021 after recording 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in Rivers Hoopers’ championship victory over Gombe Bulls.
His continental achievements included helping the Hoopers finish third in the 2024 Basketball Africa League, their best-ever BAL finish. Koko led the team to the Sahara Conference title before they defeated Cape Town Tigers 80-57 in the third-place game.
He also won the Crown Elite Championship in 2022 and the Louis Edem Invitational in 2023.
At international level, Koko represented Nigeria at the FIBA AfroCan in 2019, AfroBasket 2021 and the FIBA 3×3 Africa Cup in 2019.
As captain, he was also part of the Rivers Hoopers side that made multiple BAL appearances and went unbeaten through a 13-game run in 2023.
Rivers Hoopers marked his retirement by retiring his iconic No. 15 jersey, ensuring that the number will not be worn by another player at the club.
Koko’s retirement comes shortly after he helped Rivers Hoopers reclaim the NPBL title in 2026, with the KingsMen also securing Nigeria’s sole ticket to the next BAL season.
