Kida: I Have No Third-Term Agenda, I’ll Hand Over to New NBBF Board
Nigeria Basketball Federation President Ahmadu Musa Kida has dismissed speculation that he is planning to seek a third term in office, insisting that his priority is to conduct a transparent election and hand over to a new board.
Kida, who has led the NBBF since 2017, made the declaration while addressing delegates at the federation’s Extraordinary Congress in Yola, Adamawa State, on September 25, 2026.
‘I want to state clearly that I have no third-term agenda,’ Kida told the delegates. ‘My focus is to conduct a transparent election and hand over to a new board that will continue from where we stopped.’
There had been speculation in some quarters that Kida was seeking to extend his tenure beyond the limit provided by the federation’s constitution.
The NBBF president, however, said he was more interested in leaving behind a strong legacy than pursuing another term.
He pointed to D’Tigress’ unprecedented run of five consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles, Nigeria’s eight-year unbeaten record against African opposition, improved sponsorship and the revival of domestic competitions as some of the major achievements of his administration.
Kida urged stakeholders to support the electoral process and place the interests of Nigerian basketball above personal ambitions.
Kida also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fulfilling the commitments he made to members of D’Tigress following their continued dominance of African basketball.
Speaking in his opening remarks at the Extraordinary Congress, Kida described the fulfilment of the presidential promises as a major motivation for Nigerian athletes.
He said it also demonstrated that the Tinubu administration values excellence and is prepared to reward sporting achievement.
The Congress, held at the City Green Hotel in Yola, was attended by 39 of the 44 accredited delegates from states, zones and stakeholder groups, thereby forming the required quorum.
Kida noted that D’Tigress’ fifth consecutive AfroBasket triumph in 2025 and their unbeaten run against African opposition for more than eight years had placed Nigeria at the summit of women’s basketball on the continent.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for supporting the team and recognising their achievements.
