Rangers Defend Top Spot as EuromatchNPFL Matchday 8 Serves Up Key Clashes

League leaders Enugu Rangers face a stern test against in-form Barau FC in Kano as the Nigeria Premier Football League enters Matchday 8, with title contenders Rivers United and Doma United also chasing crucial points and pressure mounting on struggling Shooting Stars.
Rangers lead with 16 points from seven matches, one ahead of Rivers United, with Doma United third on 13 points. Barau FC, fifth with 12 points, have lost only once this season and will pose a serious challenge to the defending champions, having transformed their fortunes after narrowly avoiding relegation last term.
Rivers United also face a demanding away assignment in Umuahia. They have won four and drawn three of their opening seven matches, conceding just twice, but Abia Warriors will be eager to improve on a campaign in which they have won only once at home and sit 16th with eight points.
Doma United could climb into the top two when they visit Nasarawa United in Lafia. The Gombe-based side returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Warri Wolves last weekend, while their hosts, 15th with eight points, are seeking greater consistency.
Kano Pillars will put their unbeaten record on the line against Plateau United in Jos.
Pillars have drawn five of their seven matches and sit eighth with 11 points, level with ninth-placed Plateau United. Both sides will see the fixture as an opportunity to close the gap on the leading teams.
Bendel Insurance will look to strengthen their challenge near the top when they visit Sporting Lagos. Bendel have won four of seven matches and are sixth with 12 points, while Sporting Lagos, 11th with nine points, are seeking their first victory in three games after consecutive draws.
At the other end of the standings, Shooting Stars face a crucial test against bottom-placed Kun Khalifat in Owerri.
The Ibadan side have struggled since their CAF Confederation Cup exit and sit 14th with eight points after a goalless draw against Kano Pillars. Kun Khalifat have five points, leaving just three between the teams. Another disappointing result could intensify scrutiny of Shooting Stars coach Salisu Yusuf.
Warri Wolves and Inter Lagos also meet in a relegation battle. Warri Wolves are 18th with seven points, while Inter Lagos sit 19th with five. Both need a win to ease the pressure, although Inter Lagos can draw confidence from their away victory over Enyimba in Aba earlier this season.
