Fofana Miss Sends Reds Into Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals

Liverpool booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after beating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
The Reds maintained their perfect record against Chelsea in penalty shoot-outs, winning all five encounters between the sides after another dramatic contest produced a string of successful spot-kicks and costly misses.
Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea the lead in the 40th minute, but Cody Gakpo equalised three minutes later to send the teams into the break level.
Neither side could find a winner in the second half, forcing the tie to be decided from the penalty spot.
Alexis Mac Allister, Alexander Isak, Gakpo and Florian Wirtz converted for Liverpool, while Pedro Neto, Rogers, Roméo Lavia and Jordan Henderson were among Chelsea’s successful takers.
Valentín Barco struck the post for Chelsea, while Konstantinos Tsimikas and Ryan Gravenberch missed for Liverpool. The shoot-out remained level at 5-5 before Joe Gomez scored to put the Reds ahead.
Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili then saved Emanuel Emegha’s effort, but Chelsea stayed alive when Levi Colwill converted. Gomez scored again in the decisive sequence, leaving Wesley Fofana needing to score to keep Chelsea in the contest.
Fofana blazed his penalty over the bar, sparking celebrations among the Liverpool players and supporters as the Reds sealed a 6-5 shoot-out victory and advanced to the last eight.
