Ese Brume may start bid for 2023 Diamond League final in Rome

World indoor and outdoor championships’ long jump silver medalist and African record holder, Ese Brume may start her bid for her first Diamond League final appearance in Rome on June 5 when the first of five long jump events will be staged towards the final in Eugene, Oregon, USA next year.

The Nigerian will be among the world’s best athletes who will hit the Wanda Diamond League circuit once again in 2023, battling it out across 15 meetings and 32 disciplines for the prestigious Diamond Trophy.

Brume missed the 2022 final by just two points as the nine points she garnered in just two appearances in the competition could only place her seventh, just one spot outside the six that qualified to compete in the final.

The reigning Commonwealth Games champion and record holder placed seventh in Eugene in May which could only fetch her two points and second in Stockholm, Sweden at the end of June which got her seven points.

The 26 year old may now be seeking to start early to increase her chances of qualifying for the final and become in the process the third Nigerian women after Blessing Okagbare and Tobi Amusan to compete in the final of the Diamond League since 2010.

After the opener in Rome, the next stop will be Stockholm where the Nigerian placed second in 2022 and this will be followed by three more in Monaco (July 21), London (July 23) and Shanghai, China (July 29) before the final in Euegene.

Brume is the the second Nigerian athlete Glory Alozie to win medals at the World Championships indoors and out and at the Olympics. She won a silver medal at the World indoor championships in Serbia this year to to add to the two medals she won oudoors 92019 and 2022) and the Olympic medal in 2021 to complete the grand slam of major medals won.

Alozie won silver over the 60m hurdles and the 100m hurdles at the World indoor and outdoor championships respectively in 2019 before clinching another silver at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000.
