Abasiono Akpan makes it three wins in four races

Reigning National Sports Festival 400m hurdles champion, Abasiono Akpan made it three wins out of her last 400m hurdles races this season as the 22 year old continues to dominate in the event.

The Akwa Ibom-born, Auburn University freshman crossed the finish line in 57.27 to win the 400m hurdles event at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Saturday.

The Nigerian ran 58.85 to win her first 400m outdoor race in the NCAA circuit at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at the end of March before following up with another win

She followed that up two weeks later with a record breaking performance at the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Florida.

There sh e ran 56.93 to break Auburn University’s 20-year-old freshman school mark in the 400m hurdles, surpassing the previous record of 57.81 held by Josanne Lucas (2003).

Under the tutelage of 2003 and 2004 World and Olympics 100m hurdles finalist, Lacena Golding-Clarke, the Jamaican who coaches Tobi Amusan to a historic World 100m hurdles crown and world record (12.12), Abasiono is expected to become the eighth Nigerian woman to run inside 56 seconds in the event.
