Abeokuta 10KM Race: Over 3,000 Runners Set for October 3 Showdown

Abeokuta 10KM Race: Over 3,000 Runners Set for October 3 ShowdownMore than 3,000 runners have registered for the 2026 Abeokuta 10KM Race, with just five days to the much-anticipated road race scheduled for Saturday, October 3, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The impressive turnout has further raised expectations ahead of the fifth edition of the race, organised by Nilayo Sports Management Limited.
The race will commence at Macjob Grammar School, Onikolobo, by 7:00 a.m. and terminate at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, taking participants through major routes in the capital city and providing spectators an opportunity to experience Abeokuta’s unique character.
One of the distinctive features of this year’s edition is the decision to make it a 100 per cent indigenous Nigerian athletes’ event, with only Nigerian runners eligible to compete.
Beyond the contest for prize money, the Abeokuta 10KM Race is also expected to contribute significantly to the local economy, particularly by creating opportunities for small businesses, boosting tourism, and showcasing Ogun State as a destination for sports.
Speaking on the preparations, Project Manager of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, Seyi Johnson, said the high number of entries reflects the growing reputation of the race.
‘We are thrilled with the response. Over 3,000 registrations five days to the race shows that Abeokuta has become a staple on the Nigerian road race calendar. All logistics for a world-class event are in place – from security to medical support and route management,’ Johnson said.
Top Nigerian long-distance runners are expected to headline the elite field, with handsome cash prizes and bragging rights at stake.
The Abeokuta 10KM Race is supported by the Ogun State Government and is part of Nilayo Sports’ drive to develop road running culture across Nigeria.
