AFCON 2025: Mozambique President Offers $10,000 Per Player to Beat Nigeria

Mozambique’s President, Daniel Chapo, has promised each member of the national football team and technical staff an extraordinary prize of $10,000 if they defeat Nigeria in the Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 on January 5.

The incentive comes after the ‘Mambas’ made history by qualifying for the knockout stage of the tournament for the very first time. In his New Year’s Day message, President Chapo congratulated the players and coaching staff for their spirited performances in the group stage, which secured Mozambique’s passage to the last 16.

‘We are very proud of you, our brave compatriots, for our encouraging performance in the group stage of CAN Morocco 2025, which led us to qualify, on our own merit, for the Round of 16. Please accept, on behalf of the Mozambican people and on my own behalf, congratulations on this historic and unprecedented feat,’ he said.

Chapo emphasized that victory over Nigeria would mark another milestone, taking Mozambique to the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time. He stressed that the reward was made possible through joint efforts between the government and partners who view sport, and football in particular, as a powerful force for national unity and pride.

‘The Mozambican nation is with you and we have faith that you will win in the Round of 16 match,’ the President added, highlighting the patriotic spirit that the team’s success has ignited across the country.
