AFCON 2025: Osimhen Credits Team Effort After Man of the Match Display Against Algeria

Nigeria striker Victor James Osimhen has downplayed his individual heroics after being named Man of the Match in the Super Eagles’ 2–0 victory over Algeria in the AFCON 2025 quarterfinals, insisting the win was all about collective effort.

Osimhen scored Nigeria’s opener in the 47th minute, heading home a precise cross from Bruno Onyemaechi, before turning provider ten minutes later to assist Akor Adams for the second goal.

The performance earned him the award, but the Gaatasaray forward was quick to shift the spotlight onto the team.

‘I scored a goal and provided an assist, but we shouldn’t focus on my personal performance; we should focus on the team effort of the national team. We won against a good Algerian team that has talented players,’ Osimhen said after the match.

Reflecting on his experience from previous tournaments, Osimhen emphasized the importance of influence beyond goals.

‘For me, I was involved in the game, reflecting on my experience in the previous Africa Cup of Nations. It’s not just about scoring decisive goals, but about how we influence the game and contribute to the victory, that’s what matters most in the national team. I always strive to improve myself, both mentally and physically.’

The Super Eagles’ victory extended their remarkable record in AFCON quarterfinals to 11 wins in 12 appearances since 1992, and set up a semi-final clash against host nation Morocco.
