After Visa Delay and 200m DQ, Ezechukwu Eyes Redemption in World U20 Mixed Relay Final
After visa delays ruled her out of Nigeria’s women’s 100m campaign and a lane-infringement disqualification ended her 200m hopes, Oluebube Ezechukwu will get another opportunity to leave the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon with a medal when Nigeria lines up in the mixed 4x100m relay final on Saturday.
Ezechukwu is expected to be one of the key figures in the Nigerian quartet, which qualified for the final with a season-best 41.91 seconds.
Nigeria will start from Lane 8 in a star-studded final featuring defending pace-setters Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Australia, Italy, the United States, Jamaica, Germany, France and Poland.
The final represents a dramatic change of fortunes for Ezechukwu, who has endured a frustrating championship debut.
Visa delays prevented her from competing in the women’s 100m, denying her an opportunity to fight for an individual medal in the event. She later reached the 200m semi-finals, only for her campaign to end when officials disqualified her under World Athletics Technical Rule 17.2.3 for a lane infringement.
Now, the mixed relay provides the 18-year-old Nigerian with a chance to turn disappointment into a breakthrough moment.
Nigeria’s 41.91 seconds from the qualifying round is the fifth-fastest time among the finalists, placing the team firmly in medal contention. Great Britain lead the field with the World U20 record of 41.60 seconds, followed by Australia at 41.64, Italy at 41.74 and the United States at 41.82.
