Agunbiade Set for Senior Continental Debut in Tangier

Nigeria’s towering 18-year-old table tennis prospect Sultan Agunbiade is set to make his senior continental debut after receiving a wildcard invitation to compete at the 2026 ITTF Africa Championships in Tangier, Morocco.

Standing at 6 feet 4 inches (193cm), Agunbiade has emerged as one of Nigeria’s promising young players following a series of impressive performances at youth and senior international competitions.

The 2026 ITTF Africa Championships will provide the reigning runner-up of the ITTF Africa Youth Cup with his first opportunity to compete at the senior continental level against some of Africa’s leading players.

Agunbiade earned the wildcard after an impressive outing at the 2026 ITTF Africa Youth Championships in Accra, Ghana, where he played a key role in Nigeria’s victory over Egypt in the Under-19 Boys’ Team final.

He also reached the U-19 Boys’ Singles final after defeating Tunisia’s two-time African Youth champion Wassim Essid in the semi-finals before losing to compatriot Matthew Kuti.

The teenager further enhanced his reputation at the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos, where he became Nigeria’s last player standing in the Men’s Singles event.

Agunbiade reached the round of 16 before losing to India’s Manush Shah.

His steady progress over the past two years has earned him the nickname ‘Mr Consistency’, and he is now looking forward to testing himself against Africa’s senior elite in Tangier.

‘In table tennis, anything can happen when you are at your best,’ Agunbiade said. ‘My goal is to be at my very best in Morocco and make my presence felt, even though it will be my first senior continental tournament.’

The teenager comes from a distinguished table tennis family, being the son of Tajudeen Agunbiade, a two-time Paralympic gold medallist.

He has also identified Nigerian star Quadri Aruna as his role model and credited the former African champion with supporting his development through equipment and regular encouragement.

‘I look up to Aruna, and having the opportunity to play alongside him is a rare privilege that I do not take for granted,’ he said.

‘He is my role model, and I hope to achieve what he has accomplished and even surpass his records on the world stage.’

Away from table tennis, Agunbiade is also pursuing his education after gaining admission to the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), where he will study Tourism.

His attention, however, will now turn to Tangier, where the 18-year-old will look to make an impression on his first appearance at a senior African championship.
