Ajax coach: No cause for alarm over Calvin Bassey
Says Nigerian defender's injury 'is not so bad'
The Super Eagles have been given a big boost after Ajax of Amsterdam coach, Alfred Schreuder says the injury his Nigerian defender copped in the closing minutes of his side’s 5-0 win at the weekend will not keep out for too long.
Nigeria will play against Algeria in an international friendly game against Algeria in Oran, Algeria on September 27 and Bassey is expected to be one of the defenders Nigeria gaffer, Jose Pesseiro will invite for the tie.
Bassey was substituted in the 84th minute of Ajax’s 5-0 demolition of visiting SC Heerenveen at the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Saturday with fears that he could be out for quite some time.
The initial diagnosis of the injury made in the aftermath of the game revealed that Bassey has sustained a minor calf-related injury.
In quotes relayed by Ajax Showtime, Schreuder stated : “We were able to switch well. Maybe we switch the last player a little too early, but I thought we could do that.
“Fortunately, Calvin Bassey is not so bad. It was a kick in the calf, so that’s not too bad,” Schreuder after the game.
The Nigerian is however not likely to be fit when Ajax visit Anfield on Tuesday to face Liverpool in their second Group A match of the UEFA Champions League.
