Ajayi Needs Big Finish in Silesia to Keep Diamond League Final Dream Alive

Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi will head into Sunday’s Silesia Diamond League meeting knowing that a big performance could dramatically improve his chances of securing a place in the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels.

The men’s 100m qualification race remains wide open, with all eight final places still up for grabs and Silesia providing the last opportunity for athletes to collect points.

Ajayi currently sits 12th in the standings with eight points, seven behind the 15-point mark occupied by Oblique Seville, Noah Lyles and Akani Simbine.

With 14 of the current top 20 in the qualification standings on Sunday’s start list, the battle is expected to be fiercely contested. Trayvon Bromell and Jordan Anthony lead the standings on 19 points, alongside Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala and South Africa’s Gift Leotlela, while Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme is fifth on 18.

Seville and Simbine are among the athletes under pressure to secure their places, but Ajayi is also within striking distance.

A strong showing in Silesia could see the Nigerian climb several positions and put himself firmly into contention for one of the eight coveted Brussels places.

Ajayi’s presence adds a major Nigerian interest to a 100m field packed with some of the biggest names in world sprinting.

The 21-year-old has already enjoyed a breakthrough season, and another big performance on Sunday could provide the final push he needs to extend his Diamond League campaign to Brussels.

The women’s 100m will provide another major attraction as Olympic champion Julien Alfred goes head-to-head with world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden.

The pair will meet over 100m for the first time since last year’s World Championships in Tokyo, where Jefferson-Wooden defeated Alfred.

The St Lucian, however, has already beaten her American rival over 200m in Rome this season.

Jefferson-Wooden remains the world number one and is unbeaten over 100m since winning Olympic gold in Paris in 2024, while Alfred will be looking to reassert herself in one of the most eagerly anticipated sprint rivalries in the sport.
