As AFN Invites 29 Athletes to Commonwealth Games Camp in Abuja
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced the invitation of 29 athletes to the National Sports Commission Commonwealth Games camp in Abuja, as preparations intensify for the 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled for Glasgow, Scotland this July.
The team, comprising 14 men and 15 women, was selected based on performances at the recently concluded national trials at Yabatech Sports Complex in Lagos, as well as records of athletes who missed the trials due to visa challenges.
AFN Secretary-General, Mr. Israel Inwang, has directed all invited athletes to report to camp on Thursday, June 25, 2026, for intensive training.
Nigeria’s athletics contingent will compete in 18 events across track and field, including the men’s and women’s 4 × 100m relays and the mixed 4 × 400m relay.
Among the headline names are sprinter Kayinsola Ajayi, quarter-miler Samuel Ogazi, and world champion hurdler Tobi Amusan, who are expected to lead Nigeria’s medal charge in Glasgow.
AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, extended his best wishes to the athletes, coaches, and officials, expressing confidence in a smooth and productive camping exercise.
He emphasized the importance of the camp as a crucial stage in Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games campaign, with the athletes aiming to deliver strong performances and secure medals for the country.
